Bi-power

Rising energy costs and increasing

global pressures to reduce energy

consumption are making the need

to use energy more resourcefully

a strategic necessity. Many local

authorities have already taken action

to reduce power consumption of

street lighting which in some cases

involves complete switch off of

specific lanterns in certain areas of

towns and cities during defined times

of darkness when there is likely to be

very little traffic or pedestrian activity,

often only occurring after midnight.

An alternate method of addressing

the issue is by facilitating night

time dimming to reduce energy

consumption by using Bi power

control. This cuts energy costs and

delivers financial savings. It also

helps to reduce the associated

carbon footprint and enables

organisations to demonstrate a

commitment to social responsibility.

How does it work?

Bi power technology features

integrated power reduction to

reduce energy consumption and

light output. The standard setting is

50% dimming for 8 hours -

(3 hours before ‘calculated midnight’

and 5 hours after).

What is ‘calculated midnight’?

One of two alternate methods of

switching control are available

depending on the product in question.

Power Line switching (BPL) can be

employed from a remote time clock

or alternatively the control gear in the

lantern can include an internal clock

to allow it to operate autonomously.

This clock will register when the fitting

is switched on and off. After 2 days

the clock will calculate ‘midnight’ as

half the time of the burning hours. The

‘calculated midnight’ will be adjusted

based on the burning hours of the

previous two days.

What are the benefits of Bi

Power?

•Reduced energy consumption

•Rather than complete darkness the

lantern automatically reduces light

output by 50% for 8 hours

•Easy access to the function via an

integrated on-off BP switch on most

part of the products

•Extended lamp lifetime by reducing

the power and in turn, the stress and

heat it encounters

•No effect on colour rendering or

colour temperature

What products are available

with Bi power?

Many of the street lighting lanterns in

this catalogue have Bi power versions

already and more are being introduced

all the time. Both HID and LED lanterns

are available with Bi power control.

Consult the product pages for more

information.
