Unitrunk are helping to secure the UK’s
safest road tunnels with the refurbishment
of the original Tyne Vehicle Tunnel. After
the new tunnel opened earlier this year,
the original one is undergoing an upgrade,
featuring Unitrunk’s ultra-reliable trunking,
tray and ladder products.
Construction of the original vehicle tunnel
began in 1961 and was opened by HM the
Queen in October 1967. The new tunnel
opened to traffic in February 2011, with the
original closing, as work started on creating
a separate emergency escape passage. The
upgrade will see them become the safest
road tunnels in the UK.
