Part M solutions
Part M of the Buildings Regulation 2000, took effect on 1st May 2004 for
England and Wales, sets out requirements and guidelines covering access to,
and use of, buildings and its facilities to meet the requirement highlighted in the
Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 2005.
Practical advice on elements such as provision of wide doorways and
appropriate sanitary facilities are covered by this regulation.
Part M specifically highlights the use of switches, outlets and controls, giving
guidance on four main product elements:
Ease of operation
Visibility
Height
Freedom from obstruction
Contrasting coloured rockers, to improve visibility of switches and sockets
Switches with larger rockers and sockets that have wider gaps between rockers, to ease
operation
Grey or red coloured bangles to improve visibility and to aid operation of lighting
Engraved products to help identify electrical switches and their application
Colour contrasting grid plates providing additional flexibility
Grooved socket to direct the plug into the earth terminal
Solutions to use with cable management
Range of red devices for applications which call for equipment to identify essential or critical
supply
